About

Names, for a significant amount of human history, have been integral in understanding the universe. Scripture is full of such names. Take, for instance, the messianic prophecy found in Isaiah 9:

“For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

Isaiah 9:6

These names powerfully show who the Savior is and what He does. It seems, however, that the power of names has been lost in our modern culture, dominated as it is by Scientism.

In J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic Middle Earth story The Children of Hurin, the protagonist, Turin, takes on many different names throughout the tale, including Turambar, “Master of Doom,” and Mormegil, “The Black Sword.” We don’t often think of names in this way, being powerful and indicative of identity. I believe it is an important question, nonetheless, to consider what our name, our true name, is.

My true name is Seth, coming from the Hebrew sheth, meaning “appointed.” It is in this sense that I am the appointed one: I have been divinely appointed for cleansing at the waters of Life. My divine appointment is directly realized through Jesus Christ and His work on the blessed cross, as a result of a foreknowledge of God from before the foundations of the earth were cast. I have been appointed for grace, and that is my identity.

It is a direct result of this identity that I claim citizenship in a Heavenly nation. I also, as a result of my freely given eternality, fear God, and no man. Dissent and revolution comes naturally to one with this conviction. I am free to speak my mind without fear of repercussion. To quote Luther,

“And take they our life, Goods, fame, child, and wife, Though these all be gone, Our vict’ry has been won, The Kingdom ours remaineth.”

-Martin Luther, A Mighty Fortress is our God

No one can take away my victory.

It is with this understanding that I consider myself a Mystic Revolutionary. I believe firmly in the wondrous, heavenly, adventurous nature of our world. I believe that society must be examined in a holistic way to be truly understood. I believe that we find ourselves placed squarely in one of the most unique times in history. I believe that the Light is extra nos, it is outside of us, and therefore it will not die with us. Lastly, I believe that originality in expression is an undesirable quality. That is to say: I do not aim to add something new to the ongoing philosophical conversation, but merely to express the wisdom of what has already been said to those who perhaps have not heard it yet. This is the goal of the mystic revolutionary, the podcast, the writing, whatever it may be: to spread the Light that shines from an unearthly place; a beautiful place.

All of that said…

What’s your true name?
